Dismounting (Mounted Combat)

Artificial Life

First Post
Where in the PHB and the DMG (D&D 3.5) are there specific rules on dismounting a mounted opponent? The "Mounted Combat" sub-section of the Combat section in the PHB says absolutely nothing about it, and the Ride skill only alludes to having to make a Ride check (DC 5) each time one takes damage.

The Trip can be taken against mounted opponents, but the lance is precluded as a weapon for which this is possible.

I wonder if he usually uses a scheme similar to the concentration skill, scaled in function of the amount of damage taken... :P

You could always try and grapple the mounted opponent and pull him to the ground?

Cheers,

Well, in a campaign that features mounted knights attired in full plate and bearing lances, that's not what I'm going for. An Arthurian-type campaign that features jousting for non-lethal ends could, I suppose, simply require a Ride check on each attempt.

However, in that schema, a character with a few ranks in Ride and a high ability modifier has only a 1 in 20 chance of being dismounted.

I like the idea of damage influencing the DC. Perhaps: DC 5 + the base damage of the attacker's weapon damage (1 in most cases; 2 for doubled lance damage, etc.) + the Strength modifier of the attacker.

So, a mounted knight with a Strength 18 bearing a lance and using the charge action would impose a +6 (base 2 for doubled lance damage and +4 for Strength) on his enemy's DC. Thus, his enemy would need to beat a DC of 11 to stay in the saddle...

What do you think?

Also...if a knight has feat-granted damage bonuses to his lance (i.e. Weapon Spec. or Greater Weapon Spec.) could also apply that damage bonus to his enemy's DC.

Thus, the above mounted knight that possesses Weapon Specialization and Greater Weapon Specialization (+4 overall) would impose an overall modifier of +11 to his enemy's DC.
