Disposing of the Wealth system

Any tips for completely removing the Wealth system? Is there anyone here that has already done it? What did you do with Profession, and how much starting cash would a player have?

My 2 coppers suggestion:

PCs begin as if they were average contemporary westerners. So PC begin play with same amount of wealth the player has in real life, and remains logical (you doesn't sell your house to buy a Ferrari because you have become an "adventurer"; but you can reasonably buy some firearm). Then PCs having adventures lose their job (unless they adventure as part of their job or during vacations exclusively), so they get their only money from adventuring. They spend money as needed, but nonetheless must spend also a given sum every month (say: from 1000$ to 5000$ *) to cover "living expenses". That way, you remain some verisimilitude without bothering with pain-in-the-arse calculations. However don't forget that if someone gets a mallet with 100,000$ in small unmarked bills, they will have a hard time when trying to put it on their bank account (alerting the authorities they could be criminals of some sorts).

Edit: (*) Of course, PCs who also happen to be gamers obssessed with getting d20 books they won't have the time to read at every opportunity, it's closer to 5000$ per month than 1000$... :D

Done and done. Just calculate the wealth levels as usual, cross reference for the income level it represents, assume the PCs have a savings equivalent to about 1/3 to 1/2 (GM's discretion) that level for pre-game purchases (and leftovers remain savings). from then on, chart the income level and not the wealth number; using the profession rolls to modify the income level by 5 or 10% increments per success. Most of your footwork will be in determining the actual prices of various items.

It is easy to use a "cash in hand" system for d20 Modern. It's simple, straight forward and easy to understand. It just doesn't represent modern finances.

Your systems fail to represent investments, credit ratings, loans, credit cards, taxes, company matching 401k accounts, etc. The Wealth system is only a pain to figure out for about 5 game sessions. Then it is as transparent as any other money system.
