Divine Favor

I'm with hong and dcollins: the spell grants +2 at 6th level, +3 at 9th, etc. This is the correct interpretation of spells without special language (e.g. shield of faith, magic missile).

Yup. Otherwise the "minimum of +1" would be completely unnecessary...

Oh oh, can you sign me up on the "I agree with hong" bandwagon? 'Cause I like following the maority crowd... :) Well, that and the fact that that is how we play too. :D

Just so you know, I (and I'm sure, other people) have also felt exactly like you do.
While I understand the rules justification for hong's table, I think it's a very bad progression, bordering on lame.

1st level spells, when done right, should provide level-based benefits before level 6. It's just not very fun when you get a spell from the very beginning, and have to wait 5 levels before increasing at all, then it's every 3 after that.

They probably should have just capped it at +5.

Considering its a luck bonus to attack and damage, and can give you up to a +6 for a 1st level spell, I think its plenty good as is.

gee, I didn't see THAT one coming. LOL

I never said the spell wasn't good (strong) enough.
It's one of the best Divine spells avaiable, hands down.

I'm strongly of the opinion, however, that the mechanic is really messed up with this particular spell.
They should not have made a spell with level-dependant benefits where you receive no benefits from levels 2 thru 5. That's simply too long between increases, and is a flawed mechanic, IMO.

Is there ANY other spell in D&D that has this same problem?

I can't think of one with the same spread (4 levels) before an increase in the benefits, but Scorching Ray comes close. One ray doing 4d6 for a 3rd lvl caster. Then there's a 3 level gap (4th-6th), before a caster gets to create two rays, and then another 3 level gap (8th-10th) before it caps at 3 rays.

I never saw it as a problem. Divine Favor is such a nice low level spell for clerics since it stacks with everything (Bless, Magic Weapon, Bards song) low level groups have as buff spells... My group loves it and it's used very often even with a +1. Actually, the newbie cleric used it with a +1 till level 9 till I noticed that he screwed up his calculations in one fight... and it still was worth it.

Thanks for all your input.

Thanks again for your help, everyone. It has been very instructive for me. I'll let my DM know that the consensus was Hong's progression table (with some dissent, including my own). ;)
