Divine feats......general feats?

First Post
Hello, this is my first post here :)

I've never played a PnP game, but I'm very fond of the CRPG D&D based games like Baldurs Gate, NWN etc..

Now, my question is this:

The prerequesites for Divine Might in 3.5e are STR 13, Turn Undead and Power attack.

To get Turn Undead, you need 4 levels of Paladin.

Assume I'm building a fighter/paladin dual class, how can I get both divine might and divine shield by taking no more than 8 levels of paladin under 3.5e rules?

It may sound like a strange question, but hear me out.

In NWN (I know this isn't REAL D&D), I could have all the prerequesites for Divine Might/Divine Shield, but I can only take these feats when leveling up as a Paladin, and not as a fighter.

I'm not talking about fighter bonus feats either. I'm talking about regular feat slots.

Shouldn't you be able to take Divine Might/Shield when leveling up as a fighter, ASLONG as it's a regular feat slot and not a bonus feat slot?

It doesn't work like this in NWN, despite the fact that you may have all the requirements. You MUST level up as a Paladin to take those feats.

I just want to know if this is a quirk of NWN, or an actual rule in D&D..

Under 3.0e rules, it was possible for a Paladin to get both divine might and divine shield by level 8, because he got Turn Undead at level 3.

However, under 3.5e, Paladins now get Turn Undead at level 4, rather than level 3 which makes getting both Divine Might and Divine Shield impossible to get by the 8th level I believe..

This is important to me because for NWN2 (which will be using the 3.5e ruleset), I will be building a Paladin/Fighter character and I want to take 12 levels of fighter for Greater Weapon Spec, and the rest in Paladin levels for Divine Might AND Divine Shield.

So, whats the deal fellas?

That sounds like a NWN bug to me. If you qualify for the feat (and it's a regular feat slot as you said) you should be able to take it even if you're leveling as a fighter. Or any other class for that matter.

Thanks! Thats what I wanted to know! :)

It was really strange, because feats like Extra smiting I could take as a Fighter if I had Paladin levels, but not Divine Might/Divine Shield :\

But he only has one normal feat slot between 4th and 8th, and he wants two feats.

If what Ilium said is correct, then it doesn't matter anymore because I can take Divine Shield as a FIGHTER (with a few levels of Paladin ofcourse), and not as a Paladin..

IDNHMBIFOM, but I didn't think Divine Might or Divine Shield are fighter bonus feats. You can put any feat you qualify for in the general feat slot you get at 6th, but you only put fighter bonus feats in your fighter bonus slots.

I wasn't talking about my bonus feats. I was talking about general feats, and you just confirmed Ilium's assessment..

The problem (which now turns out to be a bug) was that I could not take Divine Might/Shield as a GENERAL feat slot when I leveled up as a fighter, although I qualified for it.

I always thought this was strange, because the same restriction never applied to extra smiting.

I can only hope that Obsidian fixes this bug for NWN2..

Ah, I thought you and Illium were talking at cross-purposes, when in fact you and I were. Bug or no bug though, that doesn't solve your problem fully, because...

Unless you get more general feat slots in NWN, which you might for all I know.

Hehe, I don't blame you for being confused

The only reason the 8 levels of Paladin mattered was because of the bug. With the bug, I HAD to find a way to get both divine might and divine shield using my Paladin levels (maximum of 8 for the build I have in mind).

But, if Obsidian fixes this bug (I hope to God they do), then the limitation doesn't matter anymore.

I can take divine shield in one of my fighter levels (12 of them) as a general feat, aslong as I meet the requirements.

You see, with the bug, I was limited to taking Divine Might and Divine Shield ONLY during Paladin levels regardless of whether I met the requirements or not.

Bioware's NWN2 implementation of D&D rules is laughable (as was their implementation of AD&D rules in BG1/2). I am not sure if Obsidian will be able to fix the whole thing, but I sure hope so.
