Divine Sorcerer

There's a class in the Dragonlance book, called the Mystic (I think), that is pretty much the sorcerer version of a cleric. They only get 1 domain if I remember right (the book's all the way across the room and it's 6 am, so I'm lazy) and cast spontaneously like sorcerers. Their 'known' spell list is smaller, and they get more spells/day. Dunno if this helps any since you seem to be looking for a druid-type.

What about simply using Favored Soul? Not my favorite class, but definately a Divine Sorceror. They even get wings. Don't ask why, no one knows. But it's a thought.

Herzog: Eh... Sorceror can learn anything? I've never even heard of that one. Far as I'm concerned they only learn what's on their list.

If you just want to go with your build (Divine Sorceror) I have no issue with it, although Divine Casters generally wear more armor (with no ASF) and have more than a d4 HD. I suppose I consider it neither under powered nor over powered; I just sort of don't understand why you want it.

about learning anything:
according to the rules the sorcerer may learn aquired spells that are not in the sorcerer/wizard list. It does not specify which spells those should be then, nor if they should be arcane.

I must admit after re-reading the RAW the rule can be interpreted in various ways, and I now assume the author was referring to custom-made spells by the DM or spells from other sources.

About the reason why I want to play this class:
I have played a druid for quite some time, and one of the things that has always irritated me was seeing the party sorcerer's casting whatever spell was necessary at the time, while being stuck with unusable spells myself.
Now that I have the chance to play something simmilar in a new campaign, I started looking for a divine class with full spontaneous casting. When I couldn't find what I was looking for, I decided to build one myself.

The point was to not re-create the druid or cleric, but to create a sorcerer that casts divine spells instead of arcane spells. Since divine spellcasting is not hindred by armor, i could have included armor feats, but decided not to.
Instead, if I would like to wear armor later in the campaign, I can always buy armor feats, or, even better, take one or more levels of fighter..... If I want to focus on spells however, those feats would go into Meta-Magic feats, and fighter levels would be a matter of wasting XP.

That's why I suggested the Favored Soul; it is the current wholly-accepted version of "Divine Sorceror" and grants additional powers without you needing to reinvent the class. You can pop down to B&N and pull it out of Complete Divine. So long as your DM approves it, you're good to go. I just think that would be easier for you (and more advantageous) than rebuilding the Sorceror build.

Agreed: the way they wrote it is open to interpretation, but it does specifically use the word "unusual" which in a RAW setting isn't Clerical magic; I can see where people would make use of that as a poorly defined loop hole, but that's why I was so shocked when it was brought up - I'd never heard of it interpreted that way. For me it simply reflects the players inherent flexibility to pull spells out of other books, flash them past the DM and ask "Can I take this?" Something I have done for my local Sorc.

That, and you get wings at 17th level. Which is pretty freakin' cool. Totally out of flavor for what I do, but most high-fantasy campaigns wouldn't bat an eyelash at (mechanically) getting Permanent Fly.
 

I don't have access to the Complete Divine, but since we are playing a relative medium to low fantasy campaign I doubt it would fit in the setting anyway.

The Divine Sorcerer has been accepted by my DM using the following set of class-abilities:

Sorcerer based on Wisdom.
Class Skills and skillpoints as Druid.
Animal Companion instead of Familiar.

pretty straightforward. All class-related things not specifically mentioned to be taken from the Druid are taken from the Sorcerer.

I still think you could do with a few extra abilities, or at least d8 HD and druid BAB, but who am I to argue with you, the actual player of the character? I hope you will keep us updated on how your character goes. Good luck in your adventures, and happy gaming!
 

For those of you interested, I have now played two sessions with this character, and up to now have no complains.

The campaign is heavy on roleplay, so that might have something to do with it.

Being able to cast exactly those spells that are appropriate is definately a good thing.

True, the list of spells I have currently at my disposal is severely limited, and I have also noted that the progression at which I gain access to additional spells is maybe a bit slow, but I have also found that the frustration I have had with a normal druid ( not having the spell necessary prepared ) is less, since I couldn't have prepared that spell at all, it not being on my current spell list!

For those still interested, my character has undergone a development I hadn't expected:

after 3 levels of divine sorcerer, she has multiclassed into sorcerer.
I am planning on going for mystic thuerge eventually...

The campaign is on temporary hiatus, but once it picks up again I'll be sure to keep you informed of any other developments.
