DM Genie

Hi gang,

Has anyone tried DM Genie? You can find it here:
http://www.dmgenie.com/home.shtml

It is so far the only 3.5 compatible character genereator/campaign organizer I've been able to find, but is it any good? So far I'm not blown away by the GUI, it is much too busy IMO.

You're welcome to try out RolePlayingMaster for 3.5
You'll find it particularly easy to switch back and fourth between 3.0 and 3.5 (with a simple ReCalculate of PCs/creatures), and may also find that it contains vitually all you need for 3.5, if you only have the 3.0 books ;)

You may find RolePlayingMaster a lot less busy for straight character management. In general, if you want the whole shebang of avialble 3rd edition functionality, its impossible to avoid "busyness", since there is just so much information to consider and display. So, its hard to blame to DMGenie for "being busy", but you may find the RPM style of presenting the info a bit more friendly. Comes down to taste somewhat.

Regards,

I've given it a whirl in the past, didn't have enough time to evaluate it properly, and it didn't have the features I was looking for at the time. Now it's expired, so I guess that leaves me out in the cold for trying the new 3.5 compatible version.

I'll give it another try though.

I use it every game, and one of my players picked it up, to use as a character generator. As a DM, I consider it invaluable. I would recommend downloading the trial version and using the tutorials. The GUI is somewhat customizable, and it is a very versatile application. Another one of my players is considering picking it up just for the access to the SRD spell list access (type the name of the spell, and it jumps to it in the list).

I swear by it, personally, but I can see how it won't work for everyone. I'd give it a whirl. If you do, there's a community of supporters and forums to help you out.

Luke's already chimed in with his offering, and there's also Twin Rose' campaign suite and DM' Familiar (both of which didn't appeal to me, but I'd try them and see for yourself).

DM's Familiar is strictly a combat organizer, rules at your fingertips, adventure notes program. It doesn't do character generation if that's your main criteria.

Campaign Suite from Twin Rose doesn't do combat but it does do character generation and lots of organizing.

And as noted, there's DM Genie and Role-Playing Master that do both character generation and combat management.

And for just character generation, there's E:Tools, PCGen, and a bunch of nice speadsheet/Acrobat forms (I use Mad Irishman's myself).

Pretty much eveyrone has free test versions available. Take em for a test drive, see which ones fit your style.

I purchased and just got started using DM Genie (after trying out the demo). To get my money's worth out of this product, I know that I'll have to invest more time into mastering the tool--which I'm working on now.

What drew me to this particular tool? It is capable of handling much of the detail of combat during actual gameplay, but also allows the players to make their own rolls (you just input the result). There are capabilites of the tool (such as weather generation) that I may or may not use.

I have not tried Campaign Suite, so I can't give you a comparison.

So far, I've mastered just enough of the tool to run combat encounters smoothly and add new content from d20 books I've purchased. I think the time invested in learning the tool has been worth it so far.

I purchased DM Genie and love it. Of all the ones listed above, it seemed to have the best organization, feature set, and ease of use IMHO. It has a supporting community on their web site and a bunch of great volunteers that make the program even better.

I purchased DMGenie after trying the demo. I needed something that I could easily use to create Classed characters and unclassed NPCs in two different lists. I needed to create over two hundred NPCs stats, some of them needing specific skills to fit their write ups.

So far, this program has been much easier to use than RPM, Campaign Suite and E-tools. I haven't used e-tools, since the 3.5 data set isn't available yet.

I like using DM's Familiar for combat, Hiya Todd :) but I use PCGen exclusivly for creating PC's and notable NPC's. And I've been using Jamis's generator for the stock guard/cannon fodder NPC's. Which just got updated to 3.5e. Devon has been working on a side project he called GMGen, which was a add-on for PCGen that was a combat tracker. I haven't looked at it but several people have said they like it.
