DM Question: How can I keep my players from taking 3 days to check a room?

The more the characters adventure..the more experienced they get..hence the better search skill. You have 5 players in your group with a time limit in a dungeon and they have adventured for quite some time, then they will know how to search quicker as well as better. You should not need to search every square foot as the spot check could be used in some instances.

You can't use the Spot skill to find traps unless you rule 0. Also, Spot isn't appropriate for finding hidden loot, unless it's a ring on the floor covered in a layer of dust and dirt with just a sliver of metal poking out.

It seems cheesier that the party can slaughter the residents of one room with swords and fireballs spells without alerting the other denizens of the lair or that the evil plot that the PCs hope to foil never comes to fruition while the PCs take all day to get through one room.

Toss the acid as an AoO.

I skimmed my previous message and I didn't see anything about fighting and its effect on drawing the attention to other denizens. I merely reiterated that using wandering monsters as a _sole_ means to "penalize" players for searching too long has its problems (1st paragraph, 2nd sentence).

Apparently you missed when I said to encourage your players to save their searches for when they have cleared the dungeon(time permitting). Usually, if the PCs have completely cleared all the encounters of a given site-based adventure, I allow them to go back and find anything they may have missed if they want.

Again, nothing about when a full search should be done, or if the DM should allow it all. Just that wandering monsters should not be the _sole_ method of moving the game along.

Also...why did you get so bent out of shape at IceBear? He was only refuting your points and was being polite, IMO. Your first post seemed far more rude and condicending than anything he said. Me thinks it is time to ready my vial of acid...

Perhaps. I did not mind the points he made; in fact I agree with them. I think (and as he suggested) didn't quite get what I was going for... perhaps my outlandish example confused the point... His closing remark, the one I quoted, did have a bit of holier-than-thou attitude. That's why I quoted it and sniped it. Maybe Icebear did not mean to come off that way--text can be flat without the inflection of speech--but I took it that way nonetheless. My bad.

Cheers,
/ds

The first part gave me a chuckle... but am lost on the second.

The first part is linked to the second part. There's a guy who pops up around here every now and then. Like I said, his name is ?_Jerel, or ?_Jarel, or something like that. He's quite opinionated and has a really bad holier-than-thou complex at times.

Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with being opinionated (naturally, I state this in my own defense :)).

Have a bard write a satyric song about their adventuring habit. Make it a hit so that the the song will be heard everywhere. Have the party be recognized on sight and laughed at by everyone.

Imagine the scene. Your village is plagued by kobold attacks that come from a nearby cave. You send adventurers to get rid of the critters. Two days later, not seeing the adventurers coming back, some people decide to go take a look at the cave where they find the adventurer, just past the first half of the first room, all on their knees and moving every little piece of dirt... :D

Usually, the players like their characters to be heroes, known for their exceptionnal feats. Being the laughinstock of an entire region is not what players have in mind for their characters.. ;)
