DMG and Underground Terrain?

How come the DMG doesn't have a section on underground terrain like it does for plains, forests, hills, etc.?

It seems strangely out of place...

I don't know why the DMG doesn't have what you are looking for. But I do know that The Forgotten Realms Underdark book does have a good summary of descriptions of underdark terrain and features. Its got numerous specific definitions for words like "vault", "chasm", "abyss", as well as descriptions of different types of stone, rock, and earth one would find in a subterranian environment.

"Dungeoncraft" from Fantasy Flight games is pretty nice, too, though non-canon.
