I decided to take a short break from work this morning and finally start to look through the 2024 DMG. One thing a quickly noticed that I haven't heard much discussion about is vastly increased guidance on running exploration in the 2024 DMG vs the 2014. So I thought I would start a thread to see what people think of the Exploration guidance in the 2024 DMG.
For Reference
2014 DMG has the following 5 sections under "Exploration" with approximately 17 paragraphs and 2 tables:
The 2024 DMG has the following 6 sections under "Exploration" with approximately 77 paragraphs, 4 tables, 2 sidebars, and a travel planner:
My first thought is that some of the expansion is probably bring in rules from elsewhere in the 2014 DMG and putting them in the correct place (but need to verify that). However, as organized in the 2024 DMG it is definitely a more robust and useful section.
My second thought was that new section "Journey Stage Challenges" seems very helpful and I particularily like the "Travel Terrain" table that keys into several of the guidelines in this section.
What are your thoughts?
