Merry Christmas, everyone!

It’s been a few days since my last post, so I figured I’d take a few minutes and post something new. Last week after finishing my Thunderspire Labyrinth assignment, I got shanghaied into helping out with some Dungeon Master’s Guide writing, so I spent some time working on the sample base town. Mike Mearls wrote a short adventure for D&D XP, and I’m marrying that to our example town; you’ll get a ready-to-play adventure and a ready-to-use base town in the DMG. We know that not everyone wants to see pages in the DMG dedicated to things you “use once,” but it’s a great help to a new Dungeon Master to have a small setting and a ready-to-play adventure right at his fingertips.

The town is called Fallcrest, and I’m pretty proud of it. It’s a trading town located at the falls of a big river, where folks stop and portage cargo around the falls. I’ve made sure to include several potential dungeons right in the town (Fallcrest is a small town built atop the ruins of a larger city). At the moment I’ve also got a good-sized area around the town included in the description, so that you know where the nearby towns are too, and half a dozen good potential dungeon sites and adventures within a couple days’ travel. We’ll see how much of that material the space available in the DMG can accommodate. In any event, I’ll be setting my next game there!

We missed on Dave Noonan’s game last week (too many players busy), which was a bummer—I was planning on converting my character into a swordmage. We’re working on some swordmage rules right now for a 2008 release, and the class is really shaping up to be something special. He’s an arcane defender; not really a gish, because his spells are generally melee range and tend to augment his melee attacks. Ironically enough, my character Karhun began as a warblade/warmage in Dave’s game many months ago. I retooled the character to convert to 4e (I went warlord with some multiclassing of wizard, you may recall), and I’m now thinking about doing it again—the swordmage class is a better fit for my original concept of the character.

sounds cool - especially the info about the surrounding area and nearby towns and villages. With this and the dungeons in and under Fallcrest my players should be able to spend quite a few levels there... ;)

He says the swordmage is for a 2008 release, so it's not the PHB2. PHB2 is due in 2009. It's probably the arcane book that was leaked by the Israeli D&D translator at the same time as Gencon.

FUGGING FANTASTIC!!!!!!

This is the bestest, greatest news I've heard so far. A real reason to buy the DMG. Not only do they tell you how to do it, they're FINALLY going to show you as well.

Sweetness.

I've actually gone from "I might buy this when my next campaign finishes" to "I'm going to at least buy the DMG when it comes out" based on this.

Adventure and setting in DMG. Well done! Newbies need it. Hope it will be a good one... so they learn the game the proper way.

A setting and a starting adventure?

D&D has finally emerged from its cave and is ready to join the rest of the RPG world.

I really, really like this team.

A small, location based setting, and an adventure, that's the best way to begin a campaign for newbie GMs. Whole world settings are great for seasoned GMs, but they can seem dauting for somebody who justs wants to master his first game.

That's one of the bests news they could annonce, a good Christmas present :)

Ick. If I ever end up DMing 4.0 I'll just use my better judgement instead of the DMG. It just seems full of stuff experienced DMs don't really need.
Sounds good for someone who's never DMed before. But that ain't me.

Good thing they're working on PHB2 already though. Nothing "streamlines and simplifies" a game like more rules.

My guess is that the swordmage is for the FR campaign guide. PHB2 is supposed to be a 2009 release, and Rich Baker has a swordmage character in an FR novel coming out in 2008 (in fact, I believe the novel's title is Swordmage).
