The DMG offers as a variant for the Sorcerer rules for playing a Witch. Basically, little is changed but the spell list, which includes some druid spells to complement "witchy" spells from the Sorc/Wiz list. However, the spell list is a fairly weak one from a PC perspective, and the rules are ambiguously worded. My question: do you read the RAW to state that the Witch is a spontaneous caster with the entire spell list as spells known? Or do you read that she must choose spells known from the (limited) list, much like a Sorcerer must?
In comparison, the spell list is roughly equal in power to the Beguiler (PHB 2), which utilizes the former rule (entire list known). There are a few less direct combat spells for the Witch, though she has fair healing access to make up for this. The Beguiler, however, has a higher HD, BAB, and skill point/level. Thus, I can only assume that for the Witch even to be remotely playable as a PC class it must work like the Beguiler. Thoughts?
What would you change to make the class playable if you feel it is necessary to make changes?
