DMing - digital or analog?

So I'm looking in another forum about a few different DM software apps and seeing all they claim to do.

I am wondering how reasonable it is to use them in game; for instance, a die roller.
Now I wouldn't want to play a game where we couldn't actually roll dice. That is a significant tactile part of the experience.

Now I understand that some DMs have their players roll their dice and use the software for NPCs. Still I prefer the DM roll the dice as well. It adds drama and anticipation waiting for the clatter and roll to see if the NPC succeeds hitting a PC at during a conclusive moment.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I dont like to see computer hardware used in game. But thats partially because it doesnt really sit well with the atmosphere of a fantasy game; but mainly due to the fact that I like to get away from IT and our regular roleplaying sessions is one of these occasions.

In most games, I find computer hardware to be intrusive, and it detracts from the overall experience.

I did use it well in a game of Shadowrun. The majority of the group was here in Boston. The player of the party decker was spending a year in Germany, and couldn't physically be present. But, since deckers are usually not physically present with the shadowrunners anyway, it worked out well...

yeah, i like the old fashioned way. hopefully if the game every becomes so complex that we all kinda need to use computers, well just switch to Rolemaster (TM) :)

For my group, we really don't have the space for the DM to spread out with a laptop or other hardware. To be honest, I think the rest of the group might be disappointed if I chose to start using a laptop--they rely on my notoriously bad dice rolling to give them an edge in otherwise tough situations. If I could get a tablet sized computer with all of my books on it (and combat management and such), that would be great! The cost is still prohibitive. I'd rather get more books for more source/rule material than spend the bucks on hardware.
