Somedays it all just comes together. I've been running my 4E group through X2, Castle Amber. They've been having a great time with it.
Toward the end of the East Wing of the mansion, there is a room with Tarot cards. One of the players got the card that gives a +1 cursed sword, that requires the character to attack and slay any "potential" enemies. The player decided to run with this and he's been doing a great job.
Add to that, I read how someone used Simon Amber, the necromancer priest, from the cathedral. He had him head to the dungeon, kidnap a character, and attempt to sacrifice him on the altar. My party made an insight check and left Simon alone. But I couldn't let it be. So I came up with the following and just had to share it.
It is too long to type, but you can read the whole story here: Josh's Blog: The History of the Sword of Acererak
In a nutshell, Acererak corrupted Simon during the forging of the sword, thereby cursing the sword and driving Simon insane.
Poof, cursed sword has a cool history, I have a new villian, and I've managed to bring the potential for using Acererak into my campaign. Not bad for a throw away cursed item and 10 minute NPC meeting.
I'm sure I hardly have to mention it, but Acererak is the demi-lich at the end of S1 Tomb of Horrors.
Amazing how it sometimes just comes together.
