While the "martyr of luck" idea isn't my standard fair, it does make the role of "hapless hero" more feasible. Not sure if I'm ever going to write it up, but if you do, please send it my way; I'd be interested in seeing it.

You know this 'ability' could fir into the 'Poltroon' class I've been toying with. The Poltroon is basd primarily on Pratchetts 'Rincewind the Wizzard' (as well as Shaggy and Scoobydoo) with a concept of being the coward-hero who hates adventure but is always getting cught up in 'stuff' and only survives on their incredible luck and knack for avoiding damage.

Poltroon
Alignment Any non-Lawful
HD 6

Good saves Reflex & Will

Level Abilities
1 Baffle, Improved Speed +10
2 Trap Sense, Mobility
3 Evasion, Diversion
4 Uncanny Dodge
5 Improved Speed +20
6 Matyr for Luck +2
7 Improved Evasion
8 Improved Uncanny Dodge
9 Matyr for Luck +3
10 Matyr for Luck +4, Abundant Step

Baffle: The Poltroon gains a +2 bonus to escape artist checks made to escape Grapple attempts
Diversion: The Poltroon can divert the attention of an opponent denying them the chance to act for one round. The opponent gets a Will save DC 13. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a ranged weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect
Matyr for Luck: If the Poltroon takes damage from any source (including accidental damage but not 'self' inflicted) they gain a + 2 Luck bonus to AC, Saves and Skill use in the following round
(okay needs work)

I was watching Big Trouble in Little China earlier.

I have this unfortunate quality of attempting to put movies and shows into game terms, particularly movies I've seen a few too many times.
Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like you're saying it's possible to watch Big Trouble in Little China too many times. Which is patently untrue.

:D

To be entertained by it, yes, you are correct. To avoid putting on my "designer's cap", however, there is a limit...

And I crossed it yesterday.

(As I hadn't seen it in nearly a decade, I didn't catch the warning signs...)

Ah, yes. Most definitely. Same thing happened to me whilst watching X-Files: Season One last week. Sure made me want to run a d20 Modern game....

I only wish my players would try more over-the-top stuff! :D I always give them a fair chance to try it when they do come up with something.

The coolest so far was the monk that more or less charged up a tree trunk and leapt from a branch to reach the head of a huge dire bear. (This was after I said he couldn't stun the bear by punching it in the leg! ;) ) He made a brilliant climb check, a decent jump check and then a nat 20 on his attack roll... He even confirmed the crit! :p

Oh, they were also throwing flaming barrels of ale off the second floor of the tavern.
Please tell me you don't actually think that ale is *flammable*, do you?

What's up with these people? This is like the third or fourth time I've seen various players talk about using ale to set things on fire or create explosions. It's friggin beer! It's 90-something percent water!! Does the US draconian alcohol policy make american teenagers entirely ignorant about things like that?

Are you sure it was a Ring of Fire Resistance, not a Frost Brand scimitar tucked into your pack?

-Hyp.

I am not sure what you are referring to, unless its from some book, perhaps?! I have read alot of books, both great and trivial, but my memory escapes me on this particular incident. Its very probable that I had read something that inspired this incident, which was about ten years ago, but I cannot recall from where I would have got this one.

Any clue would be nice..... :D
