DMs - Moving characters a great distance

Recently, I decided to use some material from Sandstorm for a new 3rd-level adventure and I need to devise a way to move the party from the Principality of Ulek to the Sea of Dust (a long way). The party is currently 2nd level.

I could create a travel adventure, but it is likely they will gain too much XP for the adventure I have in mind to be suitable by the time they get there. In the past, I tried various methods of providing them a one-shot teleportation, but that approach is falling into the over-used category for my campaign.

Does anyone have any clever ideas on how I might move the party from point A to point B without breaking the flow of the campaign?

[Yikes, I intended to post this in the General forum]

One of my one time things was this two-way portal that requires you to do seemingly meaningless things. The idea is that two locations are so similar that by performing certain actions you can connect to the other. It happens to be in two crypts about...700 miles away I think.

Now the characters are 9th-10th, so they just teleport away.

If you've used these teleportation things too much, make a travel adventure out of it, it'll be fun!

Or you could have the PCs be captured and for some reason be transferred to the Sea of Dust (it doesn't matter how they get there, because they're transferred when they're unconscious). Then have the whole escape capture adventure, but it has a whole new "where the hell are we?" connotation to it.

hope it helps :D

Great idea! ...that does help.

There is a 'Professor' that has been traveling with the party (his own motives are to study old cultural artifacts). He's been carrying around, and studying, a strange oblong box with arcane markings that he is yet to figure out.

When the time is right, I'll have him figure it out...and poof, there's my portal.

Again, great suggestion...thanks :)
