Character backgrounds and motivation
Just to chip in here again:
Yes, outside motivation is great. Honestly, the best moments in any campaign don't come when you loot the badguy's horde, they come when you accomplish a character goal. Its very rewarding to see your character make something out of himself in ways other than those involving experience and levels.
But this is coming from me, and whenever I play a PC (which is rare, as I DM a lot) I write up about a 10-12 page short story/background on my character. Its a lot of stuff to put on the DMs shoulders, but if he works just one or two things in it is immensly rewarding. I always make sure my characters give me some good background stuff, so I can work it in (its also a nice little cheat sheet for DMs--whenever you can't think of a random encounter or the like, incorporate something from one of your players' backgrounds!).
