So is this edition with all the customization going to be WOTC's version of GURPS? That is what this appears to be coming down to.

Hard to say, I am not sure what the business model is going to be.
I suspect that WoTC wants get the fans onto DDI and if they succeed with a customizable D&D then there is little need for new eidtions.
So the money comes from subscription for the core product and the real profit is in spinoffs (blardgames, videogames, MMO's novels, movies etc.)

1 more edition is enough

I agree that hopefully this will be an edition of DND to stay around for a while. I am tired TIRED of buying the same stuff over and over again with each edition. I have been playing since the basic box and 1st edition. I am really tired of plunking down my money for more of the same. If this is DND GURPS then so be it and lets stick with it for a decade or two and support the hell out of it. Make it OGL and make it thrive. I have and play Pathfinder and think WOTC needs to learn a lesson here. If you mess up the edition, DND will live on somehow and in some iteration that has been in the past no matter what you do with licensing. Make it open, make it GREAT and let it live. It will whether or no WOTC likes it or controls it or now.

Nah. I did that almost 20 years ago. After learning the GURPS system I went to work on :

DURPS

The Dweomercraefting Universal Roleplaying System.

DURPS features classes (packaged templates) and improvement is measured in XP. When enough XP for a new level is gained the classes get improvement packages (just Ads and skills pre bundled)

I ran a few sessions of it, and it was good for a laugh but basically just GURPS with less customization options. :p

Nope. It will be D&D with numerous choices to appeal to the majority of D&D players. We might not all love D&D-Next but I think most of us will really like it.
