Holy cow! I was checking ebay for RPGs and I found a lot of The Ghost Tower of Inverness, Lost Tamoachan, Up the Garden Path, and The Lost Caverns of Tsojconth going for over five thousand dollars. Haven't these bidders heard of RPGNow?!

Lot of Four Very Rare Dungeons & Dragons modules - eBay (item 290269325815 end time Oct-27-08 18:37:11 PDT)

You can get copies of these for MUCH cheaper. The price for this lot is high because the modules are original collectors editions and not regular production copies.

 Amazing! Awesome! ...Buyer's remorse?

I love D&D, including "antique" D&D gear. Whenever I'm at the thrift store, I check out the books just on the off-chance I might find a rulebook or accessory, though admittedly I don't usually go out of my way for the chance to look for D&D books. (D&D novels don't count, as those are pretty easy to find; plus I'm not really into them.) Still, I could eBay a helluva lot D&D minis for $5500.

Incidentally, the price of D&D Minis on eBay has gone down this week. ;)

Awwww, it ended with the reserve not met....
That's okay, it was stupidly high anyway, according to your price guide link above. It's one thing to expect a fair shake, but this...?

I suppose we'll likely never find out what the reserve was, other than perhaps overly optimistic.

Well, they ARE rare...

According to Acaeum...

ST1 is fetching between 1,000 and 2,000 USD, due to there being only 600 copies ever made.

Ghost Tower of Inverness goes for between 305 and 1,000 USD. Note, #000275 has been sold before. Only 300 copies ever made.

Lost Caverns of Tsojconth (note the spelling change from S4) has gone for a little as 100 and as much as 1,000 USD. Like C2, it had a print run of 300.

Lost Tamochan (again note the title change) has gone for between 600 and 1,500 USD. Like Ghost Tower, it had a 300 print run, and #275 has been sold before.

Assuming we take the seller at his word (and he seems to be a collector, since he had to have bought those numbered copies via public channels, as Acaeum can vouch for their previous sale) his starting price was a bit high (and his reserve, well that's another story).

Just FYI, the prices guides on teh Acaeum are often out of date, depending on where you look. So, if you're looking for selling advice, defintely post in the Collecing Appraisal forum with details for what you're considering selling/buying.

I'm also happy to help provide guidance on stuff you're worried about under-valuing, for example.
