Been playing DnD hardcore since 1977. I'm a bit tired so I apologize in advance for the inevitable rambling. A friend has got the play-test for 5th Edition. I'm actually excited about what little I've heard of so far. I had most of the 1st edition memorized and still remember how clunky it was. 2nd smoothed some of Adnd's kinks out. Loved most of what 3rd did for DnD. Not so much for 4th. Paizo rocks! I still laugh when people say "1st Ed feel" when talking about the rules. The "feel" was the excitement of the game, not the rules. When we focused on the rules it bogged down the game because the rules where clunky and it started arguments about how we should fix this or that. 2nd edition should have come sooner.
Best thing I've heard is that it will be modular. That I think is how you find what people like and lets the masses who fear change speak up and finally show what they want and still have the security that the old rules are still there. If a part of the game is clunky, it will slowly fade away from use except for a few vocal Grognards that want their game to never change, even though they are playing a completely new edition. If you want 1st edition, play 1st edition. Some people just want to gripe. (haters gonna hate)
I love playing Magic-users, but dislike the Vancian sacred cow. Only met a few people that liked it, but a lot of people that were scared it would be a different game if it was dropped. I wish they would someday make a good spellpoint system and make the Vancian system the option. I think that squeaky wheel should get the kick in the long run. The Unearthed Arcana Book did a spell point system that was shoe-horned in as an afterthought so it seemed a bit complex to mimic both psionics and Vancian. It looked like it would have worked pretty good mathematically if our group had given it a chance, but we already had a simpler house rule in play. I just wanted to use it because instead of using a personal house rule that only we knew of, we could just say read the UA spellpoint option in the book and not have to explain it every time. It's nice if a new player can make a character with the books they have at home.
Enough rambles for now. I hope the DNDV is a victory edition.
