Do the Etools patches make it work?

Sorry if this question has been asked to death but I did a quick check and could not find any direct answers to this.

When E-tools first came out I had the impression it was filled with errors and bugs and was almost unusable. With the patches out now has that changed?

I would really like a good Char Gen program and I do not like PCGen at all. So Etools looks like my best choice unless there are other good ones. Having both 3.0 and 3.5 datasets would be a huge plus too.

The interface from the original Char gen program from the PHB was great is Etools similar?

The interface in etools totally different then the PC generator from the PH. But the patch fixes alot of things. Make sure you have the latest version of internet explorer so you can print stuff out.

Yeah, it was. Unfortunately, the interface for eTools in not even remotely similar. It's basically a MS Access database with a few graphics from the core books. The interface is unattractive, but I'm not sure that I'd call it kludgy. In places, it's much better than PCGen's interface, in others it was much worse, when I last saw it. Post-patch it may have improved some, but without a major overhaul, I doubt it has changed much from there.

I think I am going to bite the bullet and get this despite its problems. I really need some sort of computer aid.

Are there any similar programs on the horizon that will make me wish I had waited?

Get it.
It has been fixed quite a lot as far as functionality. There are still a few things that need patched but CMP is working very hard on this program. It has the best support it has ever seen since it first was released. the latest patch is 1.2.1, and 1.3 (i think thats right) is being worked on.

You would be correct. Now there is a chance that this may change a little bit but not much if it does.

Also the 1.3 patch has been sent to WOTC for there stamp of approvial. Along with most of the datasets. So according to Mynex, it should just be a couple of weeks now. He did state that some of the datasets did not make it due to some issues that they are working on. Watch there front page for more details.

Etools is well worth it. It has come a long way and is only getting better. CMP is listening to what people are saying about it and what they would like to see it do. So with that kind of support etools will only get better with time.
