D&D 4E Do there need to be a "lot" of changes to be 4E?

No... They could simply replace the "3.5" on the cover of the current edition's books with a "4" and it would be 4e. They're the guys who print it, they can call it whatever they want.

I am, however looking forward to seeing the fairly substantial changes that they seem to be making.

I don't believe there needs to be many changes. However the few things that I feel do need to be changed are quite fundamental, and will be quite far reaching.

I'd prefer a smaller update, myself. Something akin to the 1st edition --> 2nd edition change in AD&D, where the numbers get smoother out but the game is mostly compatible. I see 3rd edition as something that came about because the AD&D system had become outdated. I don't think that 3e/the d20 system is nearly at that point yet.

Yes.

Anyway, "lot" isn't well defined, so I'm going to say "sure, why not".

There is a 12 Step program that we can refer you to, for you certainly need help. ;)

I think in light of the 3e to 3.5 grumbling that occurred, the answer is definitely "Yes." If it were a "rules refinement" you know people would be yelling and screaming about the cost and that WotC was just doing it to make a buck. By making substantial changes and releasing it as 4e, there will still be yelling and screaming, but some of that will be in excitement rather than anger.

I promise that I won't flame you but I imagine that I'll be accused of being a grou troll if I start a post in your honor ;)

I don't think you'd really be flamed so much as..well..questioned about your taste. I've played90% of the editions out for this fantastic game and 2E was my least favorite. It was the "New Coke" of the editions in my opinion.
