I was participating in this thread and decided I'd like to solicit some feedback regarding Wish.

My inquiry is two-fold. First, have you, as a PC, every actually *cast* it? No "I was the DM and an NPC cast it." No, "well it was a one-shot, so what the heck." You get the idea: multi-session game and the cost is/did affect you.

Second part. Anyone feel Wish should be a bit stronger? The spell is powerful in some respects, but some of the uses listed under the spell make me ask "why should I spend the XP on this?"

[Note: The thread/poll is only for the 9th level spell wish and we'll omit limited wish for the sake of discussion.]

[Note2: If you strictly DM, then treat the question above with respect to your players, do they cast the spell?]

[Note3: Casting from an item (scroll, ring) does not count...]

Yes, but only with the older versions of wish, where you could wish for anything and you would never get it. Damn, those thousand-word wishes were fun. :D

Our Dm uses wish as follows, the listed items in the book can be cast without need of interpratation and will always work, if we wish for something else then it is open for the Dm to work to his own evil ways. I thought that wish was quite rubbish until he told us this.

Do wishes from a ring count? If so, one of my PCs used his Ring of Three Wishes in my 2E campaign- with disastrous results... :p

No, these don't count. As the original message states, casting the wish should affect the character (sans what the wish actually does).

I had a character who could cast it, but didn't trust himself to not abuse it, so he'd cast other 9th level spells instead (Meteor Swarm and Foresight usually).

It's one of the best ways to create frankenstien monsters....

....or to change your type permanently...

....or to make magic items specifically against a certain enemy...

....or to cast for a delusional character who thinks he's a genie....

....or to make Rings of Wishes for your party.....

....or make the town build a statue in your honor....

.....or make that town worship you as a god...

In the one campaign that I got to that level, I cast it nearly every opportunity I had...I did my best not to screw over the DM, but the character was definately heady with the power. :)

In my campaigns...

There is no such thing as a wish ring or spell.... so... the point is moot.... to powerful and abusive... so that makes it simple....

I haven't had a character who is able to cast it yet, but I can't help feeling that it would be worth sorting out a sliding scale of xp costs for using the spell... wishing for a CLW seems like it should cost less xp than wishing for a raise dead (to take a silly example).

My guess is that the blanket 5000xp was chosen to make it simple to adjudicate (i.e. no adjudication necessary). It doesn't leave any room to argue!

When PCs in my campaign get close to those heady heights I'll certainly toy with a sliding scale. At the very least I'd allow someone to use wish at only 300xps if they wanted to wish for something which was completely within the remit of Limited Wish.

Cheers

Mind you, I can bet you that as soon as my Sorceress gets to cast wish, there is going to be some inherent Cha bonus appearing pronto! Worth delaying that next level for IMO.

Cheers
