I play a wizard who could have the spell, and I might even have it in my book (don't remember). I have, however, never cast it. The cost is too high, unless it's to do something that can't be done any other way, and really /really/ needs to happen.

Similarly with Mordenkainen's Disjunction. I've actually usually got one of those memorized, but I've never actually cast the sucker, fo two reasons: First, it reduces the potential loot. Secondly, it has a small chance of permanently removing my spellcasting ability, which would completely remove the character from playability. Permanently. Irrevocably.

nope never. 5,000 XP is way too high a cost. I suppose if I hadn't gotton a +3 item enhancer book for my int I may have cast it a few times to boost my int, but other than that heck no.

I'm a little surprised so many people have even cast the spell themselves. Although I think many of these votes happened before I said using a scroll/ring of 3 wishes did not "count".

My general theory is that wish is weak in many respects.

Before everyone jumps in and points out it's great abilities, I'm not referring to those. For example, raising stats, undoing misfortune, raising the dead, and it's sheer flexibility make wish a powerful spell. But is it worth the cost?

Seems to me like the answer is a strong "no." While the spell is in the game for those rare moments of actually tempting the party, or serving as a story point for DMs, or simply existing because it is required during the item creation process, it seems to me that wish just does not cut it as a 9th level spell that costs so much to cast, especially if the use is not stat raising or one of the similar unique powers of wish.

Later.

I voted no because I've never had a 3e PC Spellcaster that high of level (NPCs is a different story).

I've cast wishes in 1e and 2e using both spells and rings.

I would not hesistate to use a wish in 3e. First, its much safer than the 1e or 2e wish. Second, sure it costs exp, but magic is supposed to be expensive. Magic is not supposed to be something for nothing, instead there is supposed to be a price.

From a min-max perspective, it may not be the best spell, but I try not to care about min-max.

Note: As a gm, I might also charge 5k exp for a miracle unless the miracle is clearly something that fits within the Deities desires and sphere of influence.

I've never seen anyone cast it.

However, I'm of the opinion that it's not too weak (in fact, it's "just right"). Give up 5000 XP for permanent stat increases? Heck, yeah. At that level, regaining the 5000 XP is a complete joke.
