Do you get a feat?

one of my players tells me that you do get feats for equivelent levels (so do you have to have the right class levels to get a feat every three levels)

for example:
does a level 3 dwarven half-dragon paladin, (equicalent character level six), have two feats (one for first level, and one for third level), or does he have three (one for first level, one for third and one for sixth equivalent character level)

I can rule either way on this one, but i would just like to be better informed on the situation

please post ideas

No.

The only thing that sets him apart from a 3rd level PC for the purposes of game mechanics is he needs to get the xp totals of a 6th level PC, and has the wealth of a 6th level PC.

According to the MM, use the base creatures number of feats or one feat for every four HD of the base creature, whichever is greater. In your case, the paladin should have two feats, one for first level and one for third.

You never get feats for ECL, btw. ECL is just a way to measure the power of a PC with a non-standard race, monster race, or a template compared to the standard core races in the PH. You get feats for HD/actual character levels.

I answered this question in another thread, but I'll recap since I can't find the other thread.

FRCS p21 -Powerful Races

"You still use the character's actual level for everything else (such as when you acquire feats, skill point acquistion, and so on)."

Actual level is the actual levels of some class you have (Pal3 in your example) vs Equivalent Levels (Pal3 + 3 for half dragon as used by you).

So he has 2 feats, 1 for 1st level, 1 for 3rd level.
