I had a campaign once that I wanted to have a "common magic" flavor. So most rich people had an Ioun stone or three for incredibly trivial purposes. Like air fresheners and such.

Think of them as fashion statements.

In all of my 18+ years of play I have never seen anyone use them. That said- I am working on a character that will have one. Nifty timing for the poll.

I like everything about EXCEPT for the buzzing around one's head. I would find that extremely annoying. I am considering changing them to be a gem or bead that must be attached to the forehead or something of that sort.

I like that idea. I could see it in Eberron with the Dragonhouses......

I've never owned a single ioun stone with any of my characters. I wouldn't be inclined to purchase or craft one either. They are too easy to destroy and far too expensive for the benefit they grant. Not to mention they are kinda silly.

I've been playing since the Red Box basic D&D. I have only had one character who owned an ioun stone (I forget the color, it was 2nd ed.). I haven't had any characters in 3.0/3.5 who owned any.

I have a character who has a pink rhomboid ioun stone (+2 CON). Our party was given six of them as a reward for something we did several levels ago.

Most of the other party members use theirs quite a lot, but I tend to forget about mine. I also tend to think that my character finds it a bit odd to have a piece of rock orbiting his head all the time.

I've also played in a RuneQuest game in which the GM liked the idea of ioun stones so much that he imported them to that system. Everybody in the party had one there, too, though in that case they all purchased them.
