Also take a read through Fantasy World Building Questions by Patricia Wrede. It a series of questions to ask yourself when creating a fictional story in a fictional setting. It's geared for fantasy, but a lot of it can also be applied ot sci-fi. In fact, it's also a great resource for any DM wanting to build a homebrewed campaign setting.
