I don't really like it, but I can ignore it as long as it doesn't reach the point that they end up being arrogant about their supposed genius. Just give me a little background to how the idea came out and then let me decide how much I like it without telling me that I should like it.

I don't mind authors saying that they thought an idea was cool and so decided to devote all this time to the project or that it was a labor of love. I just hope they write it with a humble enough attitude that it comes across as "We thought it was cool and hope you do too."

Humility goes a long way with me.

Interesting question.

I voted I don't like it but it is easy to skip over. I don't have that much interest in an author telling me why I should think something is cool. I picked up the book, didn't I. That said I would not necessarily forego purchase if I found this statement in the intro.

I voted "I don't care", because in this marketing-saturated environment in which I live, I've learned to turn it all off.

I'll give that a big 'here, here!'

You can tell me that you think it's cool, just don't state that it is cool.

I just wanted to say that my posts totally rock!

Why would that irk someone?

Because saying they 'totally rock' is obviously opinion/joking. If you said you we're the best poster on ENWorld' you might get some feedback, but again, just not very important. If you said 'ENWorld is full of morons' you'd definitely get feedback.

It all depends on the weight of the statement, but usually a compliment doesn't hit as hard as a criticism. And complementing one'self or work is unbecoming/immodest.
