Do you play Dragons in lair, right??

Generally, when I DM things, unless a dragon has a very, very good reason to stay in his lair, the first thing it does when attacked is leave.

One of a dragon's primary advantages is its fantastic mobility. For a dragon, choosing to fight in close quarters is just handicapping itself. Its treasure should be already stashed somewhere otherwise inaccessable, just set up somewhere nearby and wait for the would-be attackers to come out, then start picking 'em off one by one. I mean it's not like you live to be a several hundred year old dragon without learning at least a little patience, after all.

Hey I’m between phone calls here I’m entitled to some misspelling, but thanks for not commenting on any part of the post? just plain sarcasm.

If a dragon is going to let you take him in his lair, it's only because he is quite sure no one can get through his two hundred years worth of traps, and that he's sure he can be elsewhere when you come to take him. A DM doesn't have to play a dragon smarter than the himself, just much smarter than his players. Dragon's are very smart...

It was meant to be a gate keeper not insurmountable. I was just surprised at how quickly they dusted it.

Your system wasn't robust enough. Single point of failure. No redundancy. No backup. One single bug and the whole thing crashed.

You know today has been a big eye opener for me. There are several people on this site that just love the insulting negative tedious behavior that you illustrated with your response. I find myself being attacked by people such as yourself that hide behind monitors and all of a sudden find themselves to be big tough guys. I simple posted a part of the campaign we ran and its like clock work the trolls come out lurking in the shadows just waiting for something to pounce on...online AoO! sneak attacks posted flank attacks......I’m sure your very impressed with your self, congratulations.

I've noticed in these threads there seems to be a common problem, perhaps you should keep to just the players handbook and just to low levels.

I don't think he was being insulting. Running D&D is complex. Running high level D&D is much more complex. Running high level D&D with every expansion in the world all packed into one game is extremely complex.

I would expect almost any GM who started out on the last scenario to crash and burn.

Hell, my game is only just hitting 8th level, played up from 1st, and I'm having problems (mostly what it is that makes a fight suck...).

The advice to start again with just the PHB, DMG and MM, and at first level is good advice.

Also, an Ancient Dragon that had to guard a gate (highly unlikely, I would think) would first make sure no one knew about the gate. Then make sure that if anyone found out about the gate, they wouldn't know where it is. Then make sure if they tried to find out where it is, they'd get false information so that it would seem to be there, but another gate would be there instead. Then make sure that whereever the real gate is, there'd be yet another gate right in front and another right behind it so as to make it impossible to easily use. Likely a gate that a dragon was meant to guard would be the most difficult way to get to whereever the gate was supposed to lead.

I just think he was laughing at your funny new word, not necessarily at you, Thorncrest. That said, having a look at the rest of the thread, it looks like people were playing a little rough on you (people who should really know better, perhaps.) Don't worry about it - if it gets too nasty the mods usually step in. However, if you feel you are being unfairly attacked, don't attack back - just report the post . Otherwise you just end up hijacking your own thread. :\ Best to keep it all friendly-like :)
