My experienced players usually play more then one PC at a time, mainly because my groups tend to be small. New players often only have one character.

I've assumed the question is in reference to any one PC group. My long term players also play multiple groups within the campaign world, most of which are at different levels. For example, my main player group has 5th, 9th, 12th and 20th level parties, which we take turns playing. Some of the groups "work for" the highest level group.

There was one time that I played two characters at once, but that was only because I was bringing in a new character and the the old character hadn't been phased out yet. It was great fun roleplaying the conversation between the two, though. :)

These days, the only time I play more than one character is when I'm the DM.

I generally only play one character at a time, and voted as such, but we did recently have a 1-shot game when only the DM, myself and one other player were able to turn up, in which we both played two characters.

The noteable upside, given that the module was based mostly on investigation, was that the party could split up and pursue different avenues without leaving any players out of the action, because each of us had one character in each of the two 'teams'.

However, that option generally isn't a good one in D&D in any case, given that most combat challenges are party-appropriate, and turning up at half strength with the rest of the party elsewhere is almost invariably a bad idea.
