I've got no objection to playing the four primary classes, but also like Druids, Rogues and Rangers. If I'm opting for a wizard type I'd normally plum for a wizard though (albeit a specialist).
I voted yes, but there are now eminently suitable replacements for my favourite: rogue. The scout and ninja are both classes that give me the skill points I need to really enjoy a character. The fighter is a nice straightforward way to give any character a bit of durability and some feats.
On the other hand, I could do completely without the cleric, the wizard and their ilk. The unthemed exponential spellcasting progression irritates me lately. *shrug*
Four primary base classes? That's wrong - there's six: Strong, Fast, Tough, Smart...
I'm a fan of the outdoorsy classes in Dungeons and Dragons: Ranger, Druid, Shaman (Oriental Adventures version), and Barbarian. That said, the two characters that I remember most fondly were "primary" classes, both from AD&D: a neutral good dwarf fighter/thief with the Forester secondary ability who I played as a 'ranger', and a lawful evil human cleric with a touch of megalomania.
I don't have a preference for traditional or non-traditional classes per se.
The classes I play depends wholly upon the character concept, and I don't give any thought to trying to fit my concepts into the traditional classes if I'm aware of a better fit.
On that last point: my first ever Third Edition character was a sorcerer rather than a wizard. I chose that class partly to try out the new mechanics, and partly because looking over the new mechanics sparked the idea of a character who was descended from a long line of talented wizards, but who had an innate command of magic rather than any talent for arcane study.
In that regard, I suppose you could say I chose to play a sorcerer partly for roleplaying reasons derived from the "meta" fact that sorcerers had just shown up in the game.
I like playing clerics and fighters, less so rogues and wizards.
While I like the four primary classes, these days I like to try out something new each time I build a character. My latest two PCs are a totem rager and a sapphire hierarch -- both prestige classes from Magic of Incarnum. The character I played before these two was a magister (Arcana Evolved).
Hmm ... I don't know that I would vote either yes OR no.
I tend towards elves - a LOT. But in that context I have a lot of things. I tend to like the stealthier sort with magic or psionic duo class to flavor the result. (In contrast to mhacdebhandia's emphasises.) This was so from day one.
