Do you read D&D books on public transport?

I never have, that I can remember, but then I don't take public transport. I have read them on airplanes and such, though not in a long time (I haven't flown in a while).

While standing in line or doing other things with my cousin, he used to always talk, rather loudly, about gaming related stuff, and sometimes we'd get strange looks (he never seemed to notice). Most of the time with that, I doubt people would know what he was talking about - no readily available "Dungeons and Dragons" label on a free-floating conversation.

I wonder, how many here have gotten positive, or negative, reactions from people who discover you game? Family? Office-mates? Bar-mates?

I don't take public transport to work, but when I fly on business I certainly do take my current to-read D&D book along.

I managed to get through a large portion of the 3e DMG through that.

Very occasionally. I get motion sickness if I read in a car or on the metro, but I've had rpg books with me when I've flown on business trips or to visit my family. I remember reading Twilight of Atlantis at an airport, but I was careful to keep the Avalanche cover down on my lap. Usually I take paperbacks because they are much more convenient for travel and I use audio tapes or books on CD on the metro.

I'm similar to you John in that I read them on public transport but most of the people around me aren't native English speakers. But they do sometimes get quite a bit of attention due to their colorful covers. There's a funny cultural privacy thing in which the majority of people use paper book covers so people can't tell what they are reading, so to see a colorful cover brazenly displayed (when it isn't a manga) is a bit out of the ordinary. But since I stick out anyway I don't really care. :)

Yep, I frequently read D&D material when I'm travelling by bus, train or plane. I've never had any comments but I occasionally find the person sitting next to me glancing quizzically at the book or magazine in question.

I do it all the time. I read my D&D stuff on the subways both when I go home to New York and here in DC. Usually I shield the outside cover if it is something that is likely to attract attention though (like the afore-mentioned succubus.)

I never really use public transport so that's not an issue for me.
If I'm riding in the passenger seat of a car for a long way, or on the plane I may bring Dragon/Dungeon magazine but that's seldom as I'm not really big into either magazine.

I don't bring along D&D manuals simply because of the bulk and size compared to much more convenient paperback novel.

I rarely take the bus etc anywere, even if I did I don't have much material to read. I do get quizzical glances when I mention it infrount of my friends. And little kids taunt me.

It's a beautiful life isn't it? :p

yeah i read my dnd books pretty much wherever i go, busses cabs and even at work, but thats not so odd seeing as several of the people i work with , including my roomate and fiance also play dnd, and the baker plays magic and the manager is a lord of the rings freak hehe.

as for negative responses, hehe one of my moms old friends warned her to get those books away from me, because her nephew commited suicide and they found dnd books in his room and that must have been the reason...luckily my mom isnt a moron so here i am still playing dnd

Would you take it in the car?
Would you take it near and far?
Would you read your PHB
Out for all the world to see?

Yep, been there, done that. Read rpg material on buses, on trains, on airplanes, in cars (...albeit not while driving...), in coffeeshops, in restaurants, in libraries, in bookstores, on camping trips, and even once in a museum.

I've been geeking too long to be insecure about it any more -- I have officially crossed the line into the "eccentric" category :D
