Simple. Are you a reader of fantasy books that are non-RPG related?

For the record, I count all Wizards and White Wolf productions as RPG related. The same way, authors that have RPG versions of their work, such as HP Lovecraft and Michael Moorcock are RPG related.

I never ever read RPG fantasy novels. And except for the first three Song of Ice and Fire books, I haven't read a fantasy novel of any stripe since 1991.

The only RPG-related books I've read are the first two DragonLance books and a couple of the Salvatore novels. I really wouldn't count the books that some RPG's are based off of as 'RPG novels'; the novels came way before the games based on them. If you're really counting that, then it's very likely I've read every book connected to a current RPG licensed property. It's easier to say that than list them all :)

I've only read non-RPG books for the most part. I've read a couple of the Eberron books that WotC put out, but while they were (mostly) decent, I've read a lot better. I can't see why anyone would read only RPG books, though, unless their love for the material overcame the writing.

I've only read a handful of genuine game novels; probably not more than two dozen in my entire life, and none in the last ten years or so. In my experience, they are rarely better than mediocre fare. And sadly, many are actively and aggressively horrible (Rose Estes, I'm looking at you.)

I think calling Lovecraft or Moorcock "RPG related" authors is at best counter intuitive, at worst completely nonsensical. I've read a fair amount of both (especially Lovecraft, I dislike Moorcock) but not in relation to any RPG. And as fusangite says, I actually don't even read that much fantasy anymore at all; RPG-related or not. For that matter, I don't read that much fiction anymore, but if I do, it's as likely to be a mystery, thriller, or historical fiction than fantasy related. Probably moreso, as a matter of fact.

well, the good ones, anyway...

I gotta say, for us attention deficit disorder easy to read gen-x-ers (and gen-y-ers, I assume) there's nothing better than Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms. The Eberron books ain't bad neither.

I've tried the Farseer books and some George Martins, but eeeeh...

That said, Piers Anthony, Terry Brooks, and Terry Pratchett are a blast!

I read both RPG and non-RPG novels. My favorite series is Chris Claremont's Shadow War series. It's non-RPG related, but I wish it was. I love to see a D20 game based on the Willow world.
