I haven't read a good RPG based novel in awhile. It coincidently was my first D&D novel. I thought it was great back then (I was 12), I doubt it'd be the same experience now.

Here's the book if you're curious:

I read mostly fantasy novels, but I'm changing to change that and include some other genre fiction, as well as non-fiction historical books and general computing books. Sadly, I find myself reading junk mail sometimes. ;)

Just like everything there are good and bad RPG-related novels. What a story is based on rarely has any impact on how enjoyable the story is. The author and editor are more important to a story than the background material; the best author/editor team can take even a dull setting and tell stories while the worst team can take the most exciting world imaginable and generate trash.

I read both RPG and non-RPG fantasy novels. I go through phases where I read more of one than the other, but I still read both. Some of the RPG ones are really bad and sound more like a narrative of someone's game, but sometimes I find one I really enjoy.

I wouldn't call any of those authors' works "RPG related"- they all predate the creation fo RPGs, for one. It would be more accurate to consider certain RPGs related to their work.
I was simply answering according to the criteria given.

The fact that those criteria were a little boneheaded isn't my fault. ;)

The closest I ever got to reading Fantasy RPG novels was a few Warhammer 40K novels I read a few years back. (Though, of course, 40K is a miniatures game not an RPG, so technically, it doesn't count.)
