Do you Trust Your Players?

I trust my players to mess up any preconceived notions of where the campaign will go. Therefore, I don't plan my campaigns to go in any preconceived directions.
Instead, I form the first session based on the character backgrounds and motivations to bring them to a common locale and the prospect of an initial adventure based on those goals and motivations. Then, I turn them loose to pursue what interests them with myself throwing out the occassional hook, side adventure, or bringing out threads based on the consequences of their charcters' actions or subplots.

I trust my players quite a lot. I don't see how they could cheat (we use a blackboard to record most combat information). And mainly I know how they like to play; most of them like tactics so if they cheat, they cheat themselves.
