In my game there are three classes of offense punishable by TXL (Total XP Loss):

  • backtalk
  • refusal to buy alcohol for the group
  • refusal to pay for the GM's share of the pizza
In addition, complaining that the GM is constantly throwing excess d20s at you is punishable by PXL (Partial XP Loss, ranges from 15% to 99% of total possible reward) and no alcohol.

Showing up to the game with no food for the GM, and no alcohol, is punishable by death.

I stay away from XP penalities. The game is supposed to be fun after all. Penalizing players isn't fun for anyone. And if something happens in-game in which you feel a need to penalize a player, I think you have bigger problems than XP's. Those type of problems need to be dealt with away from the game.

I like to have the players choose the best roleplayer at the end of the session. Person with most votes gets an xp bonus.

I thought about doing something similar in a campaign that uses Action Points. At the end of every session, the players would vote for the "Hero" of the session and that player would get a bonus AP.

I dont use xp normally.

i never use xp take aways.

i don't ever punish my players.

we are here to have fun.

if there is a problem i discuss it. if it doesn't work itself out after sufficient efforts, the problem player is gone.

I don't take away XP when players make magic items. They spend their own XP.

I sure wouldn't want you as my DM ever! Only because I have a hard enough time affording to feed myself and supporting my own habits much less the Know it All DM!

Depends on how you award XP. Ways to distribute XP that I can think of as follows.

Combat XP should not be reduced unless you are especially picky about metagaming in combat or you have a player who actually LOOKS UP the monster they are facing during the fight.

Roleplaying XP should only be docked to people who consistantly play against how they say their character is. Examples would include someone who describes their character as a one who tries to talk their way out of trouble, but constantly uses violence as the first option.

Quest-based XP should only be docked if they actually fail to fufill the quest.

My DM would either kill you character out right or kick you out of the game for good if you continually looked up the monsters during the fight. That is a absolutely unbreakable rule that no one in our group tolerates!
