Bad news: At the end a marathon three-day gaming session (we all took some time off from work), my character died a horrible death. And by "horrible" I mean "totally unworthy of his massive coolness factor." In such a way that he won't be revivable in any recognizable form.

Damn. I had plans to multiclass when he reached second level.

Is this a cunning reference to Pun-Pun?

One of the incarnations of pun-pun.

This one happens to involve a kobold artificer, the books of Vile Darkness and Exalted Deeds, three crafted spells, three henchmen, and a bucket of water.

Artificer (at 3rd level) Crafts one one-use objects that does each of the following:
-Cast "delay death" (characters cannot die this combat round, even below -10)
-Cast "Masochisim" (every time you take damage, your target takes damage.)
-Cast "Shield Alies" (Everytime your target takes damage, they only take half, you take half)

Start the ritual by casting the spells from the object, then having one henchman punch you in the nose. This begins a combat round. The combined magical spells have this happen: -You take (x) damage from the punch, your Masochisim targets take 1/2 (x) damage, however, this is reduced to 1/2 by the shield other, which is bounced back to you, which is sent back out by the Masochisim... which bounces back by the shield... since damage can never be reduced below 1 by anything but damage reduction (which your selected hireling does not posess) The end result is an infinite loop of single damage, Ad-infinitum all during this one combat round. Infinite damage to you, infinite damage to your target. However, despite inflicting infinite damage around the circle, the artificer and his target cannot die because of the Delay Death effect.

At the end of the turn, another henchman dunks the artifier's head into a bucket of water. The artificer voluntarily fails his "con" check to hold his breath. Please refer to the "drowning" rules, This causes his hit points to reset to exactly 0.

Because of all the damage he inflicted to his "allies" he has aquired infinite Dark Favor (BoVD). Since he'd at 0 hp he can take a partial action, and in this case, it's going to be calling out to the evil gods to cash in his Dark Favor for divine rank.

Hence: a 3rd level godling.

Sadly, it's just a little too rediculous for Most GM's to allow it, but it does work.
