D&D 5E Does 1d4 damage from basic poison (100gp) cause poison condition?

The rule says that poison applied to a weapon lasts for 1 minute. You could rule that each weapon attack during that duration applies the poison. Even with that, its still not that strong a damage upgrade.

In the DM Basic PDF, there are various creatures that do poison damage, only some of the induce the Poisoned condition, and then on a failed save. The Poisoned condition might be for only one round or for up to an hour.

That's kind of what I personally interpret the rules to mean. There isn't actually anything in the description about the poison wearing off after a single blow. Notwithstanding that if were only a single strike the much more expensive poison would be dealing half the damage of a simple flask of oil. Will have to wait for more details (hopefully!) on poisons in the DMG.

It's so weak that I think it's entirely fair to add poisoned condition for 1 minute or until target makes the save. It's still weak even at that...but at least has some application. Otherwise, I think a thrown brick does about as much damage.

Adding 1d4 damage to every attack for ten rounds is almost the equivalent of some first level spells. I wouldn't call it that weak.

Option 1: +1d4 dmg to each hit with that weapon for one minute.
Option 2: victim takes 1d4 damage each round for a minute (maybe a save can end it)
Option3: victim takes 1d4 damage and gains the poisoned condition.
Option 4: +1d4 dmg one time. Need another dose to inflict that damage.

Ask your Dm.

Personally I like Option 2 :)

Except that, nothing at all talks about ongoing damage or the poisoned condition.
The only "option" is number 1.

Poison, Basic:
You can use the poison in this vial to coat one slashing or piercing weapon or up to three pieces of ammunition. Applying the poison takes an action.
-This is pretty straight forward, I don't think anyone is arguing any of this part of basic poison.

A creature hit by the poisoned weapon or ammunition must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or take 1d4 poison damage.
-To me this is straight forward as well, you get hit by a poisoned weapon or piece of ammunition you make a save or take an extra 1d4 poison damage.

Once applied, the poison retains potency for 1 minute before drying.
-Again not sure why people are confused, the weapon remains poisoned for 1 minute, so every attack during that time does the 1d4 damage on when the target fails it save.

So no mention of poisoned condition.
No mention of ongoing damage.
The weapon gains a damage buff for 1 minute, each time you are struck by the weapon there is a chance you take extra poison damage.

People are adding in a lot of stuff not there.

I stand corrected, did not see the 1 minute before drying, but is the poison still there after the weapon hits? One hit usage or is it good for 10 hits with a sword or dagger? I see it is good for 3 ammunitions (aka arrows) and 50% of ammunition breaks/lost after is it used, therefore, I see it is per hit and has to be used with in the minute after it is applied to the weapon, one hit with a 1 minute duration

Option 4: +d4 damage one time. Need another dose to inflict that damage

but I see where there could be the ongoing possibility of damage for each hit and failed save within
that 1 minute period if the arrow does not break or if you use a dagger. How
much of the poison was retained on the blade after you hit the creature and the blade slices thru the hide/skin or feathers?

but what if the Creature has a Shield and uses it to bash the dagger out of the hand of the attacker?
and the dagger falls to the ground, how much of the poison is on the blade after it hits the ground?

what if it is raining and drops of rain hit the blade, will the poison then get diluted and the creature thens gets a bonus to save, but the poison stays wet longer, say another minute

KISS, Option 4
