Role-playing games are inherently silly, not just one edition of D&D.

They don't have to be of course, depends what you want out of them. :)

I know the legal profession use roleplay scenarios to educate members on aspects of Law. I've seen it, it's tough.

RPGs are talking games, Action & Consequence, but in your head.

Essentially RPGs are as silly as the particular group of players wish, however they are almost always fun (well except for what I've quoted above, those were just gruelling).
