D&D (2024) Does anyone else think that 1D&D will create a significant divide in the community?

it has been argued to death here... I have seen it at the 1 con I have been to since covid argued... The local comic store/game store has a guy who says Tasha's even as optional is showing WotC wont continue 5e as is... I think someone in this very thread has said as much as well...

yeah, much like 1DD is being argued to death here... outside of here I never heard anyone complaining about Tasha being incompatible with 5e (and I am too new enough here to actually not have seen that...)

again they are changing how spells overall function and indvidual spells for 2024, so this breaks down again.

so houserule which one you want or follow the rules of thumb I mentioned, i.e. depends on the class being from 2014 or 2024, just like a 3rd party class could have a different and similar spell

and to me it sound like you are argueing weith some pont I am not making so you can win an argument on the internet instead of responding to what I am saying

the only people responding right now are 2-3 disagreeing and 1 or 2 agreeing... this site has a few hundred members and we still make up a fraction of a % of overall player experence

my argument it if you take the 2 books (one we only have playtest previews of but I am useing that as my baseline) they are not default going to work at the same table without a house rule... the more house rules you need the less compatible it becomes.

If you pull out far enough all TTRPGs can be hacked together with house rules

To me to be compatible I don't need to hack the system with a houserule

you said it yourself... you need to house rule to adjust the two to fit.


my buddy can cut the head off my android charger take a spare apple charger splce it in and then plug in and charge an Iphone (I think)
that cut and splice is a hack... it is a house rule.

some hacks, some cut and splice, some house rules are small and easy fixes, some are harder and crazier fix's, the more you need the less compatible it is.

This is my first response in this thread but I have said it in similar ones. I agree with @GMforPowergamers and @Micah Sweet about this being a new edition with a spin to change it but will cause the same split most editions do.
I already see edition wars now and it is just the playtest.

I think it really depends entirely on what actually goes live in 2024.

If it's a lot of stuff as controversial as the Druid changes, then there will be a significant split.

If it's more like the Paladin changes, then there will be a split, but not a huge one, and people may well buy products "across the gap".

Does not matter to me. Does not matter for WotC. New people come and play the newest game. Sticking to the old rules also splits the community. People who are bored already have moved on. For example @Micah Sweet already is all in on LevelUp. No matter what WotC does, WotC does not get money from them.
It is the new Generation of gamers who don't have all the books they need.
Producing an outdated game does not bring in new customers.

I think calling it shoddy is dismissive towards people who actually like the changes. They don't seem shoddy to me. The changes also don't seem arbitrary to me. Actually they do make a lot of sense and Crawford even explained them.

Unappealing for you would have been perfectly fine. Especially if you have have a hard time memorizing changes you don't agree with.

Also, I also don't think we are the real target group. We already own our books. We would not have bought new books anyway. I see oneDnD as future proofing the rules. 2014 mechanics are not really top notch anymore. Having a more cohesive rules base for new people seems lile the best way to keep it appealing for new people.

I’m not seeing much work towards solving the t3 and t4 problems so many have. Some of the adventuring rule changes may end up ‘worse’ for many players. Etc.

I hope the final versions is a lot more appealing but I’m skeptical till I see it.

I respect that opinion. I hope they will strike a good balance in the end.
