My first favorite author was spymaster Frederick Forsythe (The Shepherd, The Negotiator, The Deceiver, The Veteran, The Avenger, The Fourth Protocol, Dogs of War). His novels just _drip_ with detail and has enough twists and surprises to make you _stop_ second guessing him... :)

Christian Jacq (Ramses, The Stone of Light) masters historical fiction (that's a paradox?) set in Ancient Egypt.

Steven Pressfield, for his Gates of Fire (on the Thermopylae).

Edgar Allan Poe (complete works)

Jack London (White Fangs, Call of the Wild and the very cathartic short story 'Batard')

Ironically, as many posts above are stating, what's obvious is often not true.

Me; I like to read a lot of non-fiction, non-genre and other-genre fiction, although I still read a fantasy novel about once a month on average. I just finished reading Konrad for instance, the old Warhammer book, which was OK. The DaVinci Code is next on my list. I just dropped Wizard's First Rule about halfway into it, and I also just recently read a Gotrek and Felix novel and the first three Black Company novels. Before that, earlier this year I read Perdido Street Station and I read the Lord of the Rings almost once a year. I'm also taking my time going through The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, but since you can just pick that up, read a short story, put it down again for weeks and proceed as such, it's easy reading.

Off the top of my head, I like Terry Pratchett, Alexander Irvine, China Mieville, Steven Erikson, Tim Powers, Elizabeth Hand, George RR Martin, Orson Scott Card, and HP Lovecraft. But thats nowhere near a compete, or even representative list of who I like.

Steven Erikson
Martha Wells
Jim Butcher
Glen Cook
Guy Gavriel Kay
Steven Brust
C. J. Cherryh
Lois McMaster Bujold
Chaz Brenchley
Mary Gentle
Terry Pratchett
...

JRR Tolkien, ER Eddison, Jack Vance, Greg Keyes, Roger Zelazny, Clark Ashton Smith, Ursula K Le Guin, Robert Silverberg, William Gibson, Frederik Pohl, JG Ballard, M. John Harrison, Max Barry, etc.
