Does height give you any advantages?

Mild thread necromancy...

For some reason we have been playing 4e as superior height/elevation grants combat advantage. Since day one. Now, it's entirely possible we made this up while smoking poor-performing d20s... but I'd like to think not. Did the playtest version have that rule? Does anyone know where it came from?

I can't say about playtest but there has never been any rule or even hint of such a thing in the PHB or DMG. Height is in fact never mentioned in the PHB at all really. The general way things seem to work is that a given terrain type will describe whatever modifiers it gives to the rules. So if I have say a steep embankment on my map I might note that being at the top gives you a +1 to attack anyone downhill from you, but its not a general rule.

My recollection is that 3 & 3.5e both gave a +1 to hit for elevation, so it may be a carry over from that.

Or it may be you've extended the 4e rules saying you grant combat advantage while climbing...

Personally, given the nasty things that trigger off of combat advantage, I think granting it for being lower than the enemy is rather much. In some circumstances it may be waranted, but in most cases I wouldn't give more than just a +1 to hit, and even then I wouldn't necessarily do so all the time.
