Does the character count as his ally

No, allies are always other people (look under "Target" on page 57). If you're included among the potential targets, the power says so outright.

You mean Bastion of Defense, correct? The answer to your question is yes. The Warlord is all about aiding and buffing their allies. Their is nothig about that power that even implies their is a different intent than what is written.

Yes, that is what I'm talking about, I just see them as a slightly different healer, leader character like the cleric that has as it's daily that heals all within a burst, I agree with the assessment. Damn, I wonder if that is still the best choice for me at that level .... hmmm....

The cleric daily Bastion of Hope doesn't do any damage the the enemy just weakens it. Bastion of Defense does 3[w] plus gives +1 to all allies defenses if you hit. Plus it gives allies 5 + cha temp hitpoints even if you miss. Thats a pretty bad ass power.

One notable exception: WotC CustServ has stated that paladins can lay on hands on themselves, although last I checked they had not put this in the errata PDFs

The target of Lay on Hands is "one creature." Presumably the Paladin himself is "one creature." I don't see the need for errata. Some Warlord abilities affect one or more "allies." The seems to expressly leave out the Warlord as a beneficiary of the effect.

No need for errata on this one as mentioned. However if you have the Healing Hands feat, the additional hitpoints are only for allies.

And Bastion of Defense is definitely a fantastic power for the Warlord.

Powers that say "creature" can be used on you or allies or an enemy if you like..

"Ally" are youre friends but not you..
