Does the Silver Dragon exist?

Hi, I've been playing since the 2nd edition came out..... Umm... I noticed in the monster manual that it only had the Chromatic Dragons. I started reading a bit, and I saw that it does mention the other 4 dragon families.

So is it still possible to make the other dragons, like the Silver Dragon as a playable character, or are they not in the 4th edition?

Not sure exactly what you're asking for here, but I'll take a stab at it:

1) Are Silver Dragons part of the default world/fluff? Yes, though even if they weren't, it's your campaign, add 'em in.
2) Are there currently monster stats for Silver Dragons? No - rumored to be coming with MM2 next year.
3) Are there rules for playing a Silver Dragon PC? No - there are no rules for any types of dragons as PCs. Dragons PCs are just too powerful to mix in with a normal party and have anything like a playable game; the Dragonborn are there specifically to scratch that "I want to play a dragon!" itch for you - feel free to describe your Dragonborn PC as having silver scales and a cold-based breath weapon. Otherwise, feel free to house-rule up some "dragon as PC race" rules, but be aware you're probably going to blow game balance to pieces.

I had a Dragon in the 2nd edition, and it didn't throw the balance off. The dragon I used, stays in Human form, and can only transform into the true dragon form a couple times per day.

Sure the negative 6 Armor class means I can take more hits, but for the most part, the dragon stays in its FighterMage form. The transform few times a day, refers to battles in a setting. If I can only transform say 2 times a day, that means 2 battles for a campaign.

Thanks for the info though, I'll try and figure out when the MM2 comes out for 4th edition.

If you can get ahold of the DDM card for the Young Silver Dragon from the Dungeons of Dread set, it has an RPG stat block on the back side.

Given when the cards were produced in relation to when the MM stats were finalized they likely won't match the final stats for silvers exactly, but it should cover you for now, at least for the smallest silver.

Hmm - that might actually be doable - play a normal character, but with one additional power:

Daily*Special

Transform into Dragon X. For the duration of this encounter, use the MM stat-block as your statistics.

Wouldn't even have to be an epic destiny, though that would be a cool ED. If everyone in the group is cool with it, you could just do it from first level - sure, one fight a day is pretty much an auto-win by the dragon player, but if everyone in the group is fine with the game balance destruction, then you're good to go.

Stats-wise, if you wanted to do that immediately with a silver dragon, I'd guess that your best bet would be to use the white dragon stats with fluff changed.

If you want to play anything relating to Silver Dragon working as expected, forget about anything less than paragon level campaign.

I would suggest making custom race and class, with fixed choices till 11th level, trying to emulate weakest version of dragon. Then, depending on time, either create single paragon class or few for choosing, all of them dragon specific. Also, create class powers till 30th level, with at least 2-3 choices on each level. I think that 'normal' epic destinies could be reused.

You will have to make sure that your at-wills are not too powerful - they will be probably in line with base attacks of weakest (3-4 lvl) dragons. For the rest of the powers, you can be more forgiving, but still try to keep things in balance.

Stat bonuses should be in sync with other races - but as you will start at 11th level, you can preallocate +5,+5,+1,+1,+1,+1 (or +3,+3,+3,+3,+1,+1) bonuses and pretend it all comes from dragon race. Same goes for feats - get few small powers/bonuses instead of feats you would get on lower levels.

HP should be allocated depending on the role. Silver dragon sounds like a leader probably, so set up hp accordingly (with possible +5/tier from feat). Being a dragon is no excuse to have more healing surges or hp than other players.

Breath weapon can be encounter power, without recharge possibility. Things like tail slap etc, which are at-will for monsters, should be probably encounter (or even daily) utility powers. Bloodied breath can be probably daily ability.

Generally, when balancing such characters, compare then to well optimized core PC of the same level. Your custom creation should be on average worse on many aspects, slightly (only slightly) better on one aspect. After all, you are doing it for RPG reasons, not to sneak in power-munchking overkill powers to overshadow your fellow players. Better to err on the weak side and beef it up on higher levels if really required.

Cool, Thanks guys. I'm glad to see that the idea we came up with wasn't stupid. To hear from everyone to say thats a good idea, is great to me! TO tell you the truth my character never got high enough to transform even once per day. I had to get my fighter mage to level 8 to even start, and I only got it to lvl 5/6.

Sounds like it wouldn't be easy to beat another dragon, or bigger creatures though.
