I try to encourage Character Focused narration from my players. I enjoy the game a great deal more when a player can occasionally throw in a bit of description for their character's actions. It doesn't need to be much, just a sentence or two and it doesn't need to be constant, but just during dramatic moments. Instead of a player saying "I try to pick the lock" and then rolling some dice, I would rather hear them narrate the scene like an author referring to a character along the lines of "Bob pulls out some well worn lockpicks from an old leather pouch and sets to work trying to open the door" then roll some dice and describe the outcome based on the result.
I'm not too concerned with the players narrating elements from the game-world aside from their character, but when they can work a bit of narration into the game about their character it gives that character some life beyond just numbers on a page. In other words don't tell me what your character is doing, show me by narrating it.
Just my preference. YMMV.
