Does Your Game Do Your Brain Good?

Realistically, rather than improving your vocational situation, gaming may actually harm it. For example, Israel does not allow gamers to become officers, fearing that their connection to reality is more tenuous than most.
"Realistically"?

What you're describing is not a mental effect of gaming, but rather a social consequence of someone else accusing you of gaming.

Play more, and the distinction will make sense. :)

Of course, ironically that more just proves the tenuous connection to reality that the non-gamers have.

My gaming so far has vastly improved my writing skills (nothing like four hours a week of practice), my typing skills (I've gone from 30 WPM to 55-60 WPM in three years), my ability to come up with ideas and solutions quickly, my spreadsheet skills (auto-calculating character sheets FTW), my proofreading/copyediting skills (editing the logs after each session), my research skills, etc. etc.

Peace & Luv, Liz

I probably learned more English from my 1st edition AD&D books than I ever learned in school. Also, rpgs are a great introduction to the basics of statistical mathematics and to historical studies. So, yes, I'd say it does your brain some good.

Interesting? Care to expound more in a separate thread?

RPGs also improve math skills. Markedly. Thanks to D&D and Champions, I can do rapid calculations in my head that I could never do in math class. Okay, I still suck at calculus, but who uses that on a day-to-day basis besides engineers? ;)

Nothing to expound, really... just a comment on how many misconceptions some non-gamers have about gaming. (Admittedly probably a little more snide than I really should have been, but it gets irritating after a while.)
