Dog's Grace

The cat got in its defensive stance to pounce (I don't know if on or away from the dog), but Callie (my dog) simply smacked the cat with its paw in the blink of the eye trapping it under her paw. If you saw the face my cat made you'd realize that the cat thought he was more dexterious too.

Eh, all that really says is that the dog has a higher BAB than the cat has AC. That makes sense considering the dog, no doubt, has more HD than the cat.

What you're describing is about the same as being amazed when an average dex 2nd level warrior whips up on a high dex 1st level commoner. Especially considering (in D&D terms) the dog basically initiated a grapple, where his greater strength and size give him a significant advantage.

I think it would be more of a matter of Initiative, not attack vs. AC. The dog struck quickly and effectively before the cat could react.

Surprise round. See, that's cats' real weakness. They find it difficult that any being less than a god (and those are questionable) would dare attack them.

Call it a -4 Arrogance penalty to Initiative.

Nope, the cat got into a fully defensive posture. Obviously not surprised, and using its full dex to defend itself.

Now that part I can buy! :)

Sheesh, arguing D&D combat rules applied to a cat/dog fight - how geeky can I get? Sometimes I even disturb myself...

In D&D terms, I would make the dog stronger but the cat more dextrous.

In general, all I can say is that the difference between species is probably not as much as the difference among each species.

Woo we're all dorks! My combat example got changed to d&d combat scale awesome!

My opinion was that the cat was holding his action defensively but the dog still got a good whop. The point was though, that while the cat WAS prepared it was surprised by the dogs quickness.

I do think a -4 arrogance intiative idea is good though. That cat assumed it was the boss. lets just say it stayed outside a bit longer for a few weeks after that. I laughed for a few weeks and petted my dog (I'm a dog lover) saying "good dog" next time Myron struts his stuff give him another whack!
