Domain powers

Ok a really quick question.......

When a Domain power gives a character the ability to rebuke another type of creature, like fire domain can rebuke water creatures, does the character get those rebukes in addition to the ones he gets for undead? I always thought that they were just another creature that can be rebuked but not extra turns.

Would a character with the extra turning feat have to say what pool it is for or could he just use them where he would like?

Well, the SRD version spells it out...
SRD said:
EXTRA TURNING [GENERAL]

Prerequisite: Ability to turn or rebuke creatures.

Benefit: Each time you take this feat, you can use your ability to turn or rebuke creatures four more times per day than normal.

If you have the ability to turn or rebuke more than one kind of creature each of your turning or rebuking abilities gains four additional uses per day.

Normal: Without this feat, a character can typically turn or rebuke undead (or other creatures) a number of times per day equal to 3 + his or her Charisma modifier.

Special: You can gain Extra Turning multiple times. Its effects stack. Each time you take the feat, you can use each of your turning or rebuking abilities four additional times per day.

"If you have the ability to turn or rebuke more than one kind of creature (such as a good-aligned cleric with access to the Fire domain, who can turn undead and water creatures and can also rebuke fire creatres), each of your turning or rebuking abilities gains four more uses per day." (PH 3.5 pg. 94, Extra Turning feat description)

Which answers both of your questions, I think.

It seems to be a separate pool of uses per day.

As such, the number of turning attempts for Air, Fire, Water etc. creatures is not affected by abilities that increase the cleric's undead turning attempts. edit: But the Extra Turning feat is an explicit exception.

It is a separate pool of 'turning' although the elemental or other turning powers cannot be used as the fuel for many of the divine feats. Those say 'uses 1 undead turning attempt'.

However it does lead one to imagine some new 'elemental turning(channeling) powered feats. Like ones for gaining resistances or creating an elemental burst effects. There is an example of this in the Races of Stone book.

I think of it this way: when a cleric of the fire god rebukes some fire elementals, he's not using positive or negative energy, he's using some sort of divine elemental energy to bind it.

Elemental clerics are awesome; people forget that things like red dragons and fire giants can be turned or rebuked (because they have the fire subtype). Of course, good luck beating their HD, but it might be worth a shot.
