(There ain't no such thing as a free lunch).

I wish my students would remember that one.

And another one: Be persistent. I hear it's P. Diddy's credo, incidentally, but it works for most.

One from my 9th grade bio teacher: Strive for the ideal while adapting to the real.

And, finally, the one word that, IIRC, Ann Landers said she would select as the best single word of advice: Read.

Do not rely on one source for any information, including news. There's a reason why college term papers generally require at least three sources. Make sure to seek out sources with which you don't agree as well as ones with which you do agree, so you can try to cultivate a more rounded perspective.

Use a good razor when shaving.

Whenever possible, wear fresh underwear, clean socks and comfortable shoes.

Bathe regularly.

Although it can be slightly depressing at times...I like the way Hemingway put his own twist on the idea that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure that it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry." - Ernest Hemingway

In my own way of looking at this, it means...

The world isn't out to get you especially, but rather the world is hard on everyone. You have the choice of learning from that hardship or succumbing to it.

Let the millions around you who learn from it everyday be your inspiration to do the same.

If you want to read a book that pretty much encompasses everything you need to know about life, from a certain point of view. Try reading, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

The words that I try to live by: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

The world would be a much friendlier place if we all did that.

Never trust a man who says "Trust me!"

"It's a tough universe out there; there's all sorts of people and things trying to do you, kill you, rip you off! If you want to survive, you've really got to know where your towel is!"

It is better to make love well than to make love often. (Actually, this maxim can be applied to many things, not just 'relations')
