Doom of Xbox on the horizon due to Linux?

Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, and Evolution 1&2, of course those are probably the only one. And no I didn't have to look it up.

Actually, there was technically four. The fourth being Silver, and you might even count Lodoss Wars for five. If I had added the qualifier 'name three GOOD RPGs', then you'd be stuck. DC was very heavy on fighting games and some goofy puzzle games...but it couldn't match Sony's diversity...even though Sony had ten times more crap than any other system, they had (and have) ten times more of everything.

Unfortunately I’ve been reading for a while now that t companies are jumping ship, or will, and will no longer support the cube.

So far, the only official one I've heard of is Acclaim.

The cube needs more games, no question. But for families, like mine, Nintendo will still be the number one choice. Piglet's Big Game isn't on X-box, you'll note.

Not because they were ever right or even remotely able to find any legitimate basis for claiming it to be illegal, but because they were able to bring enough bogus lawsuits far enough to make Bleem! spend more money on legal fees than development, so Bleem! eventually gave up.

I didn't say it was ethical or right. I was a proud owner of one of the first CDs. My point, which probably wasn't clear, was that they had the pockets and enough of the law on their side that they could win, one way or the other.

Edit: fixed the cartoon

Evolution 1&2 are separate games so that's +1.

Officially sure, but it's been popping up enough recently that I'm really starting to buy it, plus there was a lack of support from quarters to begin with.

This general perception of the 'Cube is highly exaggerated. It has lost a few third party titles from time to time, the bulk of which has been bottom-of-the-barrel third party shovelware. The only real loss that comes to mind is the alleged cancellation of Sega's 2K sports titles on the GC.

On top of that, companies are unlikely to completely pull support from the GC if only because they're afraid Nintendo won't allow them to publish titles for the GBA.

As for the Acclaim situation, they haven't actually dropped support:

From Planet GameCube:
http://planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=4469

Rumors on the Internet today suggest that Acclaim's new CEO has decided to completely drop support for Nintendo systems. The rumors say that upcoming games like XGRA and Legends of Wrestling III will be finished for GameCube, but no new projects will be started for the system.

We contacted Acclaim about the rumor. They say that quotes in the rumor have been taken out of context, and that the publisher is not actually dropping GameCube or GBA support. Rather, in contrast to their former policy of releasing every title on every system, Acclaim will now evaluate each title and decide which system(s) it best fits. This new publishing strategy goes for GameCube, GBA, PS2, and Xbox. Acclaim is NOT dropping support for Nintendo systems, although it's entirely possible that GameCube will see fewer of the company's games than it previously has.

Acclaim also confirmed that all of the currently announced GameCube titles will be completed and released (barring any specific, unrelated cancellations).

Ugh. I paid $9 for the first game, and I STILL felt cheated. Boy, was that game bad. I couldn't bear the thought of it's sequel, or a version on the cube. Skies of Arcadia was so good I'll probably get the revised version for the cube, just to have it, but the rest, even the highly-rated Grandia 2, left me cold. The only difference is that Grandia didn't make me want to break the disk into little pieces, whereas the others were a waste of my time.

See the above cartoon (now that I fixed the link). :) Like Ristamar says, tales of the 'Cube's imminent demise are mostly just that, tales. Despite lower sales in the states, the cube consistently outsells the xbox in Japan (both of which are outsold by a wide margin by the GBA). And the 'Cube has much better support in Japan than here, so I doubt it's future is in jeapordy.

The Nvidia card inside the Xbox is a hell of a lot more powerful than a Geforce 2. And it's not the speed of the processor that's ever the bottleneck in these operations. The bus design and OS are the real issues. Further, since the OS is scaled down and the hardware is fixed, you can push it much harder and do much more with it than a similar piece of equipment in a PC. That's the reason that DOOM3 and Half-life 2 are coming to the Xbox, even though PCs with twice the processing power on the CPU can't handle it.

Yes it does what it is supposed to do pretty well but that is run X-Box games, when you try to use it as just a computer it will be a $150 733, the arguement that it will be a good server or can be used as a actual computer is not a real good one. Most people who are in to computers enough to mess with a X-Box programming can get their hands on computers to do and type of server function or computer function (heck I picked up a 533 for $40 last year). So why do this, geeking around for the heck of it or trying to illegally copy games. I'm sure Microsoft doesn't care if you take your X-Box apart and build a robot out of it, that's not the point, but when you start copying games then it gets sticky, and if you can play a illegally copied game on any unaltered X-Box then there is a big problem. If your not trying to copy a game then why even mess with this?

Why would you want to try and run a comupter OS on a home console system? :\
"I'm going to go out and spend my hard earned money on an XBOX. Then i'm going to totally change the programing in it so I can't play any of the games I want to." makes no sense. Does this mean the orginal XBOX or the 360?
