Other than quarterstaffs and a spiked chain (hey, I had a min-maxer), no one I know has ever used a double weapon in my games.
Spiked chains are cool, but not double, despite their deplorable artwork.

Perhaps there could be variant equipment lists, like in 2e. That way, DM's who want their games more grounded in realism could go with one list, and those who want their games to be a bit more silly could go with another.

BTW, while we're on the subject of weapons, I think every 4e designer should watch "300" and remember: spears can be used one-handed!

I hate weapon size and thought it was a stupid addition to 3.5. Just another form of rules bloat that was added for the sake of "realism". Well if that weapon size remains, then I am going to have to cry lunacy for the presence of exotic weapons. Carrying a mercurial great sword or double bladed sword is about as intelligent as a halfling wielding a bastard sword. Ideally both should be left out.

What, you don't like your halfling rogue being able to use a rapier, or your gnome druid using a scimitar one-handed?

Well, there was an alternative.

Compare the stats for the 3.5-One-handed-Small scimitar and the 3.5-light-Medium kukri. Keeping the 3.0 weapon sizes system, you'd just add a 3.0-Small kukri to the equipment and druid weapon lists, doing 1d4 18-20/2x slashing, and be on your way. Since it's 3.0 "small", it's automatically one handed for the gnome and a light weapon for an orc; kill the orc, loot his kukri, and the gnome druid gets a weapon. Similarly, they could have just added a "3.0-small" main-gauche, doing 1d4 18-20/x2 piercing, on the thief list.

My halflings just used shortswords because the mental image of my halfling carrying a full sized two handed sword seemed silly. Not as silly as the halfling producing a halfling sized two handed sword. I guess if he wanted that he would have just carried a longsword. Never seemed to need rules adjudication amongst me or my players.
